We think independent Yahoo is better for competition.

A lot of the world is organized around the lack of information and trying to prevent people from knowing what is going on.

The most impressive products are those that use artificial intelligence that I cannot imagine are doable. Automatic language translation by computers…we will eventually do 100 languages. Another example, I am very excited about is geo-positioning.

The combination of DoubleClick and the Google’s ad platform will create a single exchange and platform for publishers that over time will begin to generate significant revenue to the New York Times and other competitors. Yahoo is the leader in display advertising (online).

Frankly, the free service model with free advertising is still the best model.

We try to focus on the future…internally we do talk about strategy and innovation..not about competitors. It’s much better to look forward to the kinds of things we can do. Media coverage is all obsessed about winners and losers. In fact what is really important about technology is you have the opportunity to redefine the game over and over…and the winner redefines the game.

“Don’t be evil” is misunderstood. We don’t have an evil meter…the rule allows for conversation. I thought when I joined the company this was crap…it must be a joke. I was sitting in a room in first six months …talking about some advertising…and someone said that it is evil. It stopped the product. It’s a cultural rule, a way of forcing the conversation especially in areas that are ambiguous.

What does Schmidt worry about? At our scale and position the problems are set from within. It’s not a competitor’s move that screws things up. Because of our market position and success we can define ourselves as we move forward. The great companies can overcome barriers…almost always determined by internal factors. Replicating the Google culture across 20,000 people is a challenge.

(Credit:
Dan Farber)

I worry a great deal that the Google model is set, that it can scale.

The goal for YouTube is to build a tremendous community….In the case of YouTube we might be wrong. We have enough leverage that we have the leverage of time. We can invest for scale and not have to make money right now, he said. Hopefully our system and judgment is good enough if something is not going to pay out, we can change it.

Ken Auletta and Eric Schmidt

Google is not different than the success of companies 30 years previously. The difference is it all happened quicker. It all happens in six months, not six years. At Sun we had two-year product roadmaps…at Google we have trouble doing six-month roadmaps.

The compression of time occurs because there are so many more actors. The industrialization of 2 billion players coming online…we have to listen to them.

The goal of the company is not to monetize everything. Our goal is to change the world. Monetization is a technology to pay for it.

We get between 15 and 30 million photos uploaded every day…and they are about people..they have a tremendous value to open societies and are a threat to closed societies…you will getter better governance with more transparency.

Q&A session:

Writer and New Yorker columnist Ken Auletta is interviewing Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt in San Francisco as part a program from the Newhouse School, The New Yorker and Conde Nast. Following are some highlights:

There is a tremendous amount of use of social networks…the traffic is phenomenal…and there will be advertising products in that context…it’s taken longer for the industry to find those devices but they are clearly there.

Privacy at the end of the day is how you feel about your privacy. People feel ok with ads about what you are doing but not about who you are. Privacy will be an evergreen issue.

Hopefully in the next year we will come up with some new inventions.

How to allay concern about being a competitor to partners?: There is a sea change from one model to another. Google happens to be the messenger. People are reading less print newspapers and magazines. People are consuming more on digital networks and paying less in ad rates. What we don’t know or haven’t solved it to come up with on line ad products that monetize as same rate as offline. If we invent that a lot of those concerns go away.

Google’s ambition is to solve big problems that impact a lot of people.

Our primary success was in the direct marketing piece that is quite measurable and tactical. The mobile case is just an extension of that. As mobile devices get more powerful you can do click to play ads. Mobile devices will be able to do powerful narratives…cameras, GPS…it will tell you need new pants.

Thanks to some keen spotting by Gary over at View from the Wing, suckers passengers willing to hand over this information to a central database can now join CLEAR for free, at least for the first year.

Verified Identity Pass, and its CLEAR program, has been the subject of much hype since its launch a couple years ago . However, it has received quite a bit of criticism from the security community, as well as from TSA’s head honcho Kip Hawley. In a statement last year explaining why CLEAR customers still had to take off their shoes and belts, Hawley told Congress:

Passengers wishing to join the CLEAR program will need to fork over $100 per year, plus $28 for the background check that TSA will run. As part of the application, customers are asked for their social security and drivers license numbers, although these are clearly marked as optional information.

Second: with your new Hyatt platinum number in hand, go over to the CLEAR site and sign up for a one year free membership.

(Credit:
Courtesy CLEAR/Verified Identity Pass)

I’ve thought it over, and even when it’s free, I still can’t convince myself that it’s a good idea to do this. However, for those of you who fly frequently (or who have been arrested before, and thus already have your paw-prints on file), perhaps you may find this useful.

“The technology is not yet there to provide significant screening benefits to members,” Hawley said today before the House Committee on Homeland Security, adding that providers need to tweak such systems before TSA grants full approval. He did not specify the modifications TSA seeks.

For those more adventurous travelers, as I’ve discussed before, there is another way to jump to the front of the security line – refuse to show ID.

The real sticking point, at least for me, is that passengers are required to give up a copy of their fingerprints and a retina scan. This information will then be used to authenticate you when you go through a CLEAR checkpoint. Of course, should the FBI write a national security letter and decide that it would also like a copy of that biometric information, Verified Identity Pass will be forced to hand it over. Creepy.

For the last few years, frequent travelers have had the option to sacrifice their privacy (as well as some money) for speed at the airport. Now, thanks to some keen deal-spotting by bloggers, passengers can skip to the front of the airport security line for free. The question to be asked is: even when such services are free, are they worth the price?

Verified Identity Pass is one of three companies that participate in TSA’s Registered Traveler program. The company offers separate lines leading to TSA checkpoints for its subscribers. Passengers passing through one of these lines get to skip to the front of TSA’s security checkpoint — although they still must take off their shoes and belts.

First: go and sign up to be a member of the Hyatt Hotels Platinum Program (valid until March 31).

The review has emphasized the need for privacy and the protection of civil liberties and has included discussions with groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the Center for Democracy and Technology, the administration officials said.

Hathaway’s team has 14 days left to create a cybersecurity action plan for the president. That plan, to be presented on April 17, will be a springboard for White House-led cybersecurity plans in the coming years and will put the onus on the White House to direct interagency cybersecurity efforts, said the officials, who declined to be named.

There were also discussions with more than 50 universities about relevant research currently underway and ways in which it could be used to improve the country’s security. About 70 universities collaborated on a report on ways they could contribute to a national cybersecurity effort.

The Obama administration has sought out unprecedented levels of input from government agencies, the private sector, and other organizations, the officials said. In all, the review so far as consisted of more than 40 meetings and has yielded more than 100 papers to inform the final action plan.

The intersection of military operations and telecommunications policy is just one of the many facets of cybersecurity currently under review by the administration as it wraps up its 60-day, government-wide review of cybersecurity programs.

After reviewing presidential directives, strategic plans produced by advisory boards, and a host of other cybersecurity documents, the review team identified more than 250 requirements for securing cyberspace that were commonly recognized as critical. The team asked government departments to explain what plans were in place to meet those requirements relevant to their department mission. For instance, the team met with the Social Security Administration and the IRS to discuss their unique role in securing citizens’ personal information and maintaining public trust.

The government may have to take a new approach to securing the nation’s telecommunications infrastructure, two senior administration officials said Friday.

Two officials familiar with the review, led by Melissa Hathaway, the acting senior director for cyberspace for the National Security and Homeland Security Councils, said the laws and policies governing telecommunications have not kept pace with the technology in the sector. Consequently, the administration is reviewing ways to balance the need to address evolving threats–such as viruses or organized cybercrime–with the maintenance of information infrastructure, they said, talking to reporters on a conference call.

The review team is currently conducting a gap analysis to determine how best to coordinate interagency policy from the White House and how to architect cybersecurity efforts like standards in the procurement process.

Not everyone’s “got the ‘open’ memo” just yet, but Reuters apparently has.

That’s hard to say, because after reading through the FAQ and the project site, I’m still awash in a muddle of buzzwords and Silicon Valley speak. But what it appears to mean is that it’s a Web service that allows someone (even me) to send content (this specific blog, your recipe, a weather report, whatever) to the service to have it (in under a second) attach metadata.

As with Google Maps, I suspect that this will lead to people much smarter than me creating cool mash-ups and applications. Here’s what Reuters has to say:

I’ll stick with: in goes basic text, out comes super-text. My wee brain can handle that.

Maybe this means that it starts connecting the dots (Matt is talking about Reuters, which is a $5 billion information management company; the blog is hosted by CNET Networks, which, according to X source, Reuters once considered buying; Matt was just named the best pie maker on the planet; etc.) and sends it back in this enriched format so that I could then use the metadata to improve site navigation, better organize my content, or whatever.

Huh? And? Well…

The Calais Web service enables publishers, bloggers and sites of all kinds to automatically metatag the people, places, facts and events in their content to increase its search relevance and accessibility on the Web. It also lets content consumers, such as search engines, news portals, bookmarking services and RSS readers, submit content for automatic semantic metatagging that is performed in well under a second.

commentary

The global news and information company this week has opened up the API to its OpenCalais project, which enables content creators/aggregators to enrich their content services. What does this mean in English?

My big question is what Reuters will do with the service. It’s open to commercial and noncommercial use with light-handed licensing terms. Would The New York Times use something like this? I doubt it, but who knows? Open source and open APIs make collaboration possible just about everywhere.

The Calais Web service returns content in an open, interoperable and entirely portable format, with a unique identifier that can be easily integrated into social networks, widgets and semantic applications like Powerset, Freebase, Twine, Hakia, Wikia, Blue Organizer and more.

In goes basic text, out comes super-text. Or semantic web text. Or Web 12.0. Or whatever.

Newly created Web threats grew 1,564 percent from Q1 2005 through the end of 2007. That’s nearly 200 percent growth every quarter. This is due to the large number of variants written off of a base of the original threat.

These numbers point to the fact that the bad guys are winning. Even the most sophisticated security departments at enterprise organizations are no match for this onslaught. We really need to re-think our security model by adding “up the stack” layers of defense (i.e. more application protection), building in end-to-end trust, and working with expert security service providers like Trend Micro and others.

Note to chief information security officers: The worst thing you can do is go it alone.

This morning I met with security company Trend Micro to discuss security trends and upcoming products. The data that Trend presented was even frightening to a security pessimist like me. Case in point:

I often tell people that the state of information security is far worse than they think. Yes, I realize that the security industry loves this type of messaging because fear sells product, but I truly believe that things are really bad.

In 2005, Trend examined less than 1 million malicious code patterns. In 2007, there were nearly 5.5 million malicious code patterns. In the first four months of 2008, Trend has already seen more than 2 million.

Activision announced Friday that its new first-person shooter Secret Service will be released later this year for three platforms:
Xbox 360,
PlayStation 2, and the PC. The title will let players assume the role of an elite agent tasked with protecting America’s top leadership under high pressure.

The story takes place on Inauguration Day in Washington D.C. An extremist assault has been launched against the capitol and it’s unclear who’s friend or foe. There’s no time for negotiation as players get thrust into the line of fire to protect the nation’s leaders. The action takes place among famous landmarks and everywhere in between, including both Marine One and Air Force One.

It’s been interesting to hear Sarah Palin, the Republican VP nominee, accusing Barack Obama of “palling around with terrorists”–a huge distraction, in my opinion, from the economic crisis and other pressing issues. If that’s not the kind of distraction you enjoy, I have another that might prove more fun.

If a browser had anything to do with iTunes, this wouldn’t be so egregiously bad. But it doesn’t. No, Apple’s move bears the imprint of a would-be monopolist that cares more about its market position than its customers. I’m guessing it has little to do with Safari and much to do with…the
iPhone.

It only works when Apple starts to betray Microsoft-esque tendencies, tendencies which we should help to squash. Immediately. Before Apple begins to rely on its market position more than the quality of its products, in ways similar to how Microsoft has grown.

Apple makes incredible products. I bought the Macs because they’re better. I love my iPhone for the same reason. I, and millions of others, don’t need to be tricked into adopting Apple’s software and hardware. We just need to be given a compelling reason to switch. Millions are doing just that, and not because of some sly software “update.”

Apple already has a place on the desktops of many Windows users through iTunes. Like Microsoft before it, Apple figured this was a great Trojan Horse to start pushing its other software. Like Microsoft before it, Apple stepped over the line, as John Lilly, CEO of Mozilla, suggested:

I’m a huge Apple fan. I have a few Macs, iPods, and iPhones. But I don’t want my entire computing experience dominated by any one vendor, including one that I like and trust as much as I do Apple. For this reason I consciously choose to use a variety of different software applications on my
Mac, much of them open source.

Last week Apple decided to try its hand at bundling. Tying is just around the corner.

commentary

John then goes on to say he’s not against Apple’s use of iTunes to push the
Safari browser. He’s wrong. Larry Dignan suggests John’s complaint stems from Mozilla trying to protect its lucrative search relationship with Google. He’s wrong, too.

So, I don’t use Safari and can’t fathom any reason for a Windows user to adopt it. It’s a great browser but…who cares? It doesn’t provide any differentiation that Internet Explorer or Firefox don’t already provide.

Except for its tie to the iPhone, of course. Safari is the application platform Apple uses for its iPhone. Why should Apple care about which browser you use? Because it cares about which phone you use. Apple won’t sell a single license to Safari, but it’s definitely hoping to sell you a boatload of iPhones.

What Apple is doing now with their Apple Software Update on Windows is wrong. It undermines the trust relationship great companies have with their customers, and that’s bad — not just for Apple, but for the security of the whole Web.

All of which makes me highly disappointed in Apple’s decision to force Safari on users through its iTunes update service. “Safari-gate” couldn’t have happened with open source, as iTWire notes. It doesn’t work in a transparent, trust-based relationship.

But, I’m not sure the words have ever been more true than when I saw the info on Inada’s latest massage chair, the Sogno.

I’ve been in a colossally bad mood today, for no particular reason. But I am sure 15 minutes (OK, 30 minutes) in this baby would do the trick. It uses an infrared body scan to determine a particular individual’s central acupressure point as well as “full shoulder/neck air massage with neck traction capabilities, shoulder to fingertip arm massage, arching full body stretch,” and something called total relaxation Dream-Wave Technology. Not sure what that is, but it sure sounds good.

Alas, I’d even settle for Inada’s earlier music-synching W.1 Masssage Chair. But it’s not to be. If anyone needs me, I’ll be downstairs using CNET’s iJoy massage chair and feeling sorry for myself.

As a tech writer, it’s not uncommon to see a press release or a photo of some new gadget and have an instant sensation of “I need that.”

Now all I need is the teleporter and a time machine to get it here now. Inada is showing it off to reporters at next week’s Las Vegas Winter Furniture Market.
